| He Who Taunts the Enemy” shows a scene which occurred quite frequently among the North American Plains Indians during the 1870's. In each tribe there was a warrior society whose goal was to protect the tribe and win honor for themselves in battle - this society was known as the Stronghearts. This particular Strongheart warrior, a Northern Cheyenne, has advanced, taunting the enemy with his quirt. He challenges them to come forward in personal combat, hoping that by defeating them, he will win a prized eagle feather - the symbol of honor! |
